In this video I present ‘six songs in seven minutes’ – a sample from each of six new co-creations with young people from Vrygrond in Cape Town.

The themes of these songs range from concerns with gangsterism, drive-by shootings, drugs, and xenoophobic attacks, to love of family, singing and hope for the future.
Where my own concerns often connected with those of my co-writers was around the theme of sustainable vs. unsustainable futures.

The collaborators include two boys (14 and 15 y.o) and four girls (14, 15, 15 and 17 y.o.), You don’t hear their voices in this video but they all have sing-back versions of their songs and are now getting familiar with singing their song. Hopefully, given a little time, they will share their songs with the community, in church, in the mosque, and with the world online.

The Sozo Foundation have generously facilitated the use of their space, and have been instrumental in making these encounters happen. Thanks to Wendy, Nelisiwe, April and a special thank you to Ida Gormsen.

“The The Sozo Foundation is a non-profit organisation, based in the impoverished Cape Flats community of Vrygrond, Cape Town. Sozo creates opportunities for holistic development through three key areas: Education, Skills and Enterprise.”

Thanks to all who came to write 😉
